🤓 : This movie was very endearing . “Fire Island” follows a group of friends on their annual trip to Fire Island off the coast of Long Island, NY. Here the crew will party, keep old memories, and make new ones. The story is centered and anchored by the tight bond between Noah (Joel Kim Booster) and Howie (Bowen Yang) as Noah tries to show Howie how desirable and powerful he is and can be . Through their very different definitions of romance, the audience explores what it means to feel wanted , who gets to be chosen , and what leagues one is in or out of. The film often discusses whether there is anyone out of our leagues in the first place. Maybe you’re the friend who the world says is beautiful , the one who the world reminds is not , or — perhaps —the one who falls somewhere in the middle, too emotionally damaged to process it all. No matter where you are on the spectrum , you will find yourself feeling for everyone and you’re rooting for the misunderstood and the overlooked .
The movie is funny, heartwarming and thought provoking. What could be mistaken as a simple surface level film , turns out to much more nuanced . Many moments poke fun or take purposeful shots at a society that tries to make gay asian men and gay men of color feel small. There’s a lot more subtle -and not so subtle - social commentaries that will make you laugh and *yeesh* at the same time.
Overall, “Fire Island” was a smart comedy that was a breath of fresh air. All characters - both main and supporting - were intriguing, entertaining , and nuanced in their own right . This movie is a gem and I would definitely recommend the watch.
