🤓: I feel grateful to have seen this film and to have been let into something so intimate. The director , writer, and star of the film ,Rebecca Huntt, shows a tremendous amount of vulnerability and freedom when sharing this coming of self story. This film is not just a movie, it’s a deeper philosophical journey that has major stakes for Huntt, her loved ones, and her future generations. Huntt shows up for herself and the story each and every time — even when it’s uncomfortable .
In Beba, we follow the life a young Afro-Latina woman born and raised in New York. Beba is an artist , daughter, friend, sister, truth teller, truth seeker and whoever else she wants to be.
Throughout the film, we travel through core memories and revelations in the form of BEAUTIFUL archival footage, poetry, conversations, nature, and music. Thankfully , this isn’t your typical (and often stale) documentary with perfect lighting, a neutral background, and interviewees sitting on couches . Instead, this particular vérité style makes this film more stand out from the rest.
We are inside Beba’s world which is not perfect and posh — it’s just real. And this is what makes this documentary so refreshing. This is not to say that the shots and choices were unintentional because that is definitely not the case . All choices were deliberate as we explored Beba’s brain and heart — a beautiful collage of core memories , landscapes , and emotions.
I loved this movie … so much. This film (and filmmaker) deserves all the flowers, praise, and respect because this documentary is truly special. It’s complex and simple. It’s big and subtle . It’s a search and an arrival at truth. Beba shows healing as a revolution …healing as deep work… healing as messy work … and healing as necessary work for yourself and those who come after .
