🎬: Black Art : In the Absence of Light
Platform : HBO Max
Director : Sam Pollard
Production : HBO Documentary Films , Two Dollars and a Dream
🍿 : it’s giving art history
, how to guide of owning your voice, versatility , take notes , something from everyone , beauty, no limits , FUBU, blackness beyond the monolith , we been knew & y’all late to the party , and a breath of fresh air .
🤓 : The documentary unpacks the journey of a multitude of black artists — fine artists —across their various mediums. We learn not only about the artists but the moving parts behind the art creation process , the role of curators , and the role of black power players to elevate and illuminate great talent . The film features artists, curators , musicians , professors , writers and more - look for cameos from David Driskell, Kehinde Wiley, Amy Sherald , Swizz Beatz, Kara Walker , Kerry James Marshall and more. What this story does beautifully is look at art as something honest , pure, enlightening and influential rather than hyper focusing on arts proximity to fame, money and power. We see the artists in this films as visionaries with distinct stories to tell. Beyond this we see the important work that the curators , print makers , and critics play in making the art happen and remain relevant.
