“C'est quoi cette famille ?!” On U.S. netflix it’s called, “We are Family” though not the literal translation.
Platform : Netflix
Director : Gabriel Julien-Laferrière
🍿: It’s giving ... good time low stakes comedy , brush up on your high school French , cute , casual , a little diversity, but not a lot film.
🤓 :This movie follows the ultimate blended family. Bastien, his half siblings , step siblings , cousins and everything in between are sick of bouncing from house to house and take matters into their own hands. These kids are hip to the messiness of their parents, the toxicity of marriage , and the incompetence of those who are supposed to be adults . While this film could have lingered in these heavier themes , the writers found a way to creatively acknowledge these moments then quickly return to levity. The story is light hearted, feel good, and quite funny . It was cool to watch this film and feel like I was hanging out with the Parisian version of the “Cheaper By the Dozen” kids. However this film is not at all parallel to the cookie cutter American “big family” narrative. It’s less sibling rivalry and high school drama and more cussing , weed, sex, and sass. The love between the siblings and family is super pure, genuine, and refreshing.
🎥💡🎵Tech and Specs: The audio/visuals of the film were standard. What stood out the most to me was the strength of the writers of this film —particularly with character development. With a cast of 15 plus, many characters were able to stand out and not just be one of many. The writers found a nice balance of between playing upon tropes while not making the characters seem too cheesy/one dimensional.
🎭 Shoutouts: Chantal Ladesou as Aurore
