🤓: Jasmine is a star is a refreshing and inspiring film following a young teen from Minneapolis who aspires to be a model. As a young woman with albinism, Jasmine fights for her big dream and lives in her most expansive version of self all while navigating a world that often doesn’t fully understand or fully see her.
The entire film feels easy and realistic . It is as if you’re watching yourself (or maybe a younger cousin) on screen. Unlike many youth films , Jasmine portrays a teenager that feels familiar. Nothing about her story is overly dramatic , traumatic or too perfect to be true. The portrayal of youth in this film is accurate, authentic, and endearing.
If you get to catch the film, peep the how palpable the chemistry between Jasmine ( @iyana_leshea) and her on screen mama ( @shacagempls ). If you squint, close your eyes, and tilt your head, you may see your teenage self and mama looking right back at you —- reflecting both the small tiffs and deep love shown both loudly, and subtly.
It was very special to be apart of the East Coast premiere of this film at @blackstarfest. After the screening , writer and director , Jo Rochelle , spoke about her journey creating this film and her takeaways as a first time filmmaker. The rest of the attending cast and crew shared their unique journey with this project as well. It’s clear that there is a deep connection, love , and respect the team has for one another. It was beautiful to witness.
Everyone in the audience from family, friends to strangers were cheering as the credits rolled and beaming like proud family. If you hear about the film in future be sure to check it out. Jasmine is a star, and so is @thejorochelle . Congrats !!
